» Barrier Edging FAQ’s

Q: Why do I need an edge restraint?
A: Paver edge restraints hold the pavers in place. Without an edge restraint the paver joints will separate during freeze-thaw cycles encouraging room for vegetation to grow and lessen the stability of the pavers especially near the edges. This will also cause a safety hazard. Eventually your installation will fail.

Q: What are the advantages of plastic edge restraints over a concrete edge restraint?
A: Plastic will expand and contract unlike concrete. Once the concrete has cracked or been broken it can no longer function as an edge restraint.

Q: Why is Barrier Edging better than other plastic edge restraints?
A: Barrier Edging is a foam injected high density polyethylene edging manufactured using recycled plastics making it stronger and more tolerant of harmful Ultra Violet rays. Barrier Edging also has a patented connection system, engineered nail bosses every 4”, and an open base to encourage root growth.

Q: Will the sun damage my Barrier Edging?
A: No! Due to the manufacturing process, the harmful UV rays barely penetrate the surface of Barrier Edging. Also, once the edging is installed and backfilled with soil the edge restraint is not exposed to the sun.

Q: What is the product Warranty on Barrier Edging?
A: Barrier Edging is backed by a lifetime product warranty that protects against any material defects. Warranty is on product replacement only and does not include labor.

Q: What is the length of Barrier Edging?
A: Each piece of Barrier Edging is 6’8” long.

Q: What is the height of the side wall of Barrier Edging?
A: The height of the side wall is 2”.

Q: Where can I purchase Barrier edge restraint?
A: Barrier Edging is sold at most Lowe’s stores and some Home Depot’s.

Q: How do I learn the proper way to install the Barrier Edging?
A: Inside each pack of Barrier edging are written and visual installation instructions.

Q: How do I know how much to purchase?
A: To determine how much edge restraint you will need simply add up the length of the perimeter of you project that is not up against a permanent structure (ie; house, garage or curb). Barrier edging is sold by the Two pack- two pieces (13.33 lf.) or Eight packs- eight pieces ( 53.33 lf.). Divide the total lineal feet by either 13.33 or 53.33.

Q: How many spikes will I need for my project?
A: We suggest approximately one spike every 16” for pedestrian walkway and patio’s and one spike every 12” for vehicular applications.

Q: Where can I purchase spikes for the edging?
A: The same place that you purchased the edging should also carry packs of spikes for the edging. There are eight-8” spikes in a package. The general rule of thumb is one pack of spikes for every two-pack of Barrier edging. If purchased separately you can use 8”, 10” or 12” spikes.

Q: How do I connect sections together?
A: Set the tongue of one section on top the hub another section and join sections together by spiking through the tongue and hub.

» Low Profile Barrier FAQ’s

Q: What is the difference between Snap Edge and Low Profile Barrier?
A: The most significant difference is that Low Profile Barrier has a shorter side wall (1-3/8”) and Snap Edge is (2”). Low Profile Barrier is 6’8” long and Snap Edge is 8’ long.

Q: How do I decide which edge restraint is best for me?
A: The deciding factor is typically the height of the paving unit. If the paver is between 2-3/8” and 3-1/8” thick, then Snap Edge is the appropriate product. Use Low Profile Snap Edge if your pavers or slabs are between 1-1/4” and 2” thick.

Q: If I am installing on top of a sand/cement (dry pack) mixture, do I still need an edge restraint?
A: Yes, especially if you have a serpentine installation where small cut pieces may be on the edges and the possibility exists that these may come loose. The edge restraint will help secure these pieces.

» Snap Edge FAQ’s

Q: Why do I need an edge restraint for my paver installation?
A: Edge restraints are a key part of interlocking pavement systems. By providing lateral resistance to loads, they maintain continuity and interlock among the paving units. Without an appropriate edge restraint, the joints between pavers will open up under the forces of regular foot and vehicular traffic and with any freeze/thaw cycles.

Q: What are Snap Edge’s dimensions?
A: Pieces are 8’ long. The height of the side wall is 1-7/8” and the bottom is 2-7/8” deep.

Q: Does Snap Edge get installed on top of the aggregate base or on top of the sand setting bed?
A: Snap Edge should always be installed directly on top of the compacted aggregate base for proper support and to allow the spikes to grip securely. Bedding sand should be removed from the area where the edge restraint is to be installed; use the side of a trowel to remove the sand while being careful not to disturb the sand under the pavers on the edge.

Q: How far beyond the finished pavement should the compacted aggregate base be to assure that the edge restraint is installed properly?
A: The compacted aggregate base should extend at least 6” beyond the edge of the finished pavement to ensure the spikes will grip properly.

Q: What size spikes are recommended for use with Snap Edge?
A: Use a 3/8” x 8” or 3/8” x 10” spike. Non-galvanized spikes are preferred as the rust will help secure them in place.

Q: What is the proper spacing for spikes?
A: For residential non-vehicular applications, install spikes every 16”. For residential vehicular and radius applications, 12” spacing is recommended.

Q: How do I use Snap Edge on radius applications?
A: Simply snip the support bar on the bottom to bend the edging to create smooth inside and outside curves.

Q: Why is Snap Edge a better alternative to a troweled-in-place concrete toe restraint?
A: A concrete toe is prone to failure in freeze/thaw conditions and makes changes to the original design difficult. Quality can also vary due to variations in materials and/or labor.

Q: Why is Snap Edge better than other plastic edge restraint products?
A: Some plastic edge restraint systems require you to buy one piece for straight sections and another for radius sections. Snap Edge can accommodate both conditions; simply snip the back support to bend the product where needed.

Snap-Edge’s patented section-to-section connection system keeps bedding sand from leaking where two pieces of edge restraint meet. Sand loss at these intersections can cause depressions in the pavement.

Some plastic restraint products have a mostly or fully solid bottom, which makes it difficult to grow grass right up to the edge restraint due to the shallow depth of the soil. Snap Edge’s open base design allows grass to root properly and protects it against brown out in extreme heat.

Q: How does Snap Edge compare to metal edge restraints such as steel and aluminum?
A: Both steel and aluminum are typically more expensive than Snap Edge and are difficult to reshape after being bent.

Q: Will the sun damage my Snap Edge restraint?
A: No. The materials used to manufacture Snap Edge are resistant to harmful UV rays.

Q: How to I determine how much edge restraint to buy?
A: Edge restraint is needed on every side of pavement not up against a permanent structure, such as a house or concrete curb. Measure the total lineal feet needed and divide by 8 to determine how many pieces to buy (e.g. 32 lineal feet of edging/8 = 4 pieces of Snap Edge). Snap Edge’s “one piece does all” design lets you use it for both straight and curved sections of pavement.

Q: Where can I purchase Snap Edge?
A: You can find of authorized resellers by clicking on the “Find-a-Reseller” section of this website.

Q: What is the product warranty on Snap Edge?
A: Snap Edge is backed by a lifetime product warranty against any material defects.

» Sta-Right FAQ’s

Q: What are Sta-Right’s dimensions?
A: Pieces are 4’ long. The height of the side wall is 2” and the bottom is 2¾” deep.

Q: Why is Sta-Right only 2” high?
A: Most professional landscapers recommend 2” of mulch or decorative stone in a landscape bed. Too much mulch can actually be harmful to plant life. If you’d like more than 2” in your beds edged with Sta-Right, crown the mulch or stone in the middle and gently taper it off to 2” on the edge next to the edging.

Q: How does Sta-Right compare to the black coiled edging that I see all over?
A: Most coiled edging products are not rigid enough to stand up by themselves and the mulch is not strong enough to hold them upright. Typically they fall over very quickly and start pulling out of the ground. Because of their flimsy nature, straight lines and graceful curves are difficult to achieve. Sta-Right Landscape Edging solves all of these problems.

Q: Most of the black coiled edging that I see is 4” high, why is Sta-Right only 2” high?
A: Installation instructions for the coiled edging products call for you to bury half of the total height. Sta-Right’s flat bottom design eliminates time consuming trenching.

Q: How is Sta-Right Landscape Edging packaged?
A: There are 16 lineal feet of edging and twelve 6” spikes per package (enough for one spike every 18”)

Q: How do I know if I am installing the edging properly?
A: There are labels inside each package that have both written and visual instructions in English and Spanish.

Q: How do I make a radius using the Sta-Right landscape Edging?
A: Simply snip the support bar on the bottom to bend the edging to create smooth inside and outside curves.

Q: What is Sta-Right Landscaping Edging made of?
A: Sta-Right Landscape edging is made from 100% recycled High Density Polyethylene (HDPE).

Q: Will the sun damage my Sta-Right Landscape Edging?
A: No. The materials used to manufacture Snap Edge are resistant to harmful UV rays.

Q: Can I use a weed barrier with Sta-Right Landscape Edging?
A: Yes. Install the weed barrier first and spike right through it. It’s recommended that you flash the weed barrier up the back of Sta-Right. Trim any excess that protrudes from the top of the edging after your installation is complete.

Q: Where can I buy the Sta-Right Landscape Edging?
A: As Sta-Right Landscape Edging is a brand new product on the market, our list of distribution partners is changing daily. Please contact Snap Edge Corp. at 800-932-3343 for names of the closest to you.

Q: What is the product warranty on Sta-Right Landscape Edging?
